F I G H T E R C O M M A N D Welcome to Fighter Command. The object of this text game is to stop the German bombers bombing London. To help you there are 9 Squadrons of 12 British fighters, based at various locations in the South East of England. The locations can be seen when accessing the Map which can be viewed any time within the game. This map is gridded so that the co-ordinates of both the bombers and the fighters can be worked out giving an indication of their progress and also so that you can work out the intercept bearing. By way of interest, the Squadron locations, designations and type of aircraft are historically accurate, as serving during the war years in those locations. The introduction allows you to read the basic object of the game, and then presents you with a list of the options open, in respect of the point values able to be gained. Once you have made a mental note, the main part of the program is loaded. Answering the first question sets the scenario, and the initialisation contiunues. There is a constant menu reminder at the bottom of the screen, and it must be born in mind that the first key press pauses the action for you then to select the appropriate command. As the game progresses you will see that you will be updated as the "Raiders" progress by way of co-ordinates. The London target is set at TQ4575, it is at that location that the "Raider" will have reached London. The menu reminder options are as follows:- C = Change Course Input new co-ordinates for that Squadron. B = Return to field This will make the Squadron return to its home airfield R = Report Status As indicated, reports the current status of the Squadron. S = Scramble Squadron Self explanatory. M = Map & Status Gives the South East Map & the overall status of both Squadrons and Raiders. P = Patrol Squadron Sends the Squadron on patrol this normally follows a South Westerly direction. There is not a lot more to tell you save that the game ends when either there are not enough bombers left to fulfill your opening scenario question, in which case - you win!!, or to many bombers bomb London than you allowed for, in which case you lose. The final screen gives you an overall statistical update and overall score. A FEW HINTS ON PLAY Try 50 bombers first to give yourself a chance. The author has only successfully completed zero bombers once or twice!!! Get Squadron 3 "On Patrol" early. Don't be too hasty in scrambling the Squadrons. As the game draws on, allow the Squadrons closest to London, to fly in the area of London. Perhaps use two of them in rotation. You cannot combine parts of two Squadrons into one, and they will always return to their own field. Remember its the bombers you're after and not the Escorts. Oh! didn't I tell you about the escorting German fighters, sorry. Unless you have plenty of fighters left, then leave the raider with no bombers but some escorts alone! I think that will help you be successful. One last thing - I'm afraid the attrition rate in your fighters is high.
