THE VOLUNTEER ORGANIST The preacher in the village church one one sunday morning said, Our organist is ill today would someone play instead, An anxious look went round the face of every person there, As eagerly they watched to see who would fill the vacant chair, A man then staggered down the aisle his clothes were old and torn, How strange a drunkard seemed to me in church that sunday morn, But as he touched the organ keys without a single word The melody that followed was the sweetest ever heard, Each eye shed tears within that church the strongest men grew pale, The organist in melody had told his own lifes tale, The sermon of the preacher was no lesson to compare, With that of lifes example who sat in the organ chair, And when the service ended not a soul had left a seat, Execept the poor old organist who started towards the street, Along the aisle and out the door he slowly walked away, The preacher rose and softly said Good brethren let us pray, The scene is one i'll ne'er forget as long as i may live, and just to see it all again all worldly wealth i'd give, The congregation all amazed the preacher old and grey, The organ and the organist who Volunteered to play. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: K2E Subject: FOR SALE BBC model A upgraded to 32K Fitted with ATPL Sidewise ROM board Phillips green monitor OPUS double 40/80 drive (drive 0/2 is OK, but drive 1/3 groans a bit at times) Data recorder. The bill comes to 30 pounds. The manager is feeling generous and tells the waiter to give them back 5 pounds. So the waiter thought, "I know, I will give them back 3 pounds, 1 pound each". The other 2 pounds he put in his pocket they have now paid 9 pounds each so 3 nines are 27 and 2 pounds in the waiters pocket is 29. Where has the other pound gone? It is best at first to use all the clues. Write all the letters down on a sheet of paper, the more different letters you have the easier it will be Put on your paper figures one to nine and zero (for ten) on one line. You are told that the last digit is the last letter so write that under zero. Continue with the other letters using the pound first. If the price is say 3 pounds 60 pence and the letters are G.HS then write the S under the zero and G under the 3. You may find that you have two different letters under the same figure at first. If you have a 1 pound in your show of prices then you know definitely that the letter is the first of the ten letter word. To use the percentage clue if the the mark up is say 11 percent and the price shown is say 6.50 then to get a rough idea of the original price would be to reduce the percentage by 1 then caLculate 6.50 less 10 percent = 5.85. Or not so rough, a, 6.50 * 100 = 650 b, 11 + 100 = 111 c, divide 650 by 111 = 5.86 This lets you know that the letters shown with the 6.50 are the correct ones to write under the 5 and 8. Usually you will find just one or two of the ten letters missing so it needs a little bit of extra skill to complete the word. I hope all this helps but after reading it myself it looks a bit of a muddle!! The best of luck. You will see over forty diffe- rent arrangements of letters. These will be a familiar phrase, title saying, name etc. but in a mixed up form. I have put the answers for you to check with your interpretation. Your answer maybe better! I have also written a different version for SOLINET disc magazine. (PhraseS). The program should keep the Christmas party busy for a half hour. The child- ren may like it and get the answers more quickly than the adults! So..... MERRY CHRISTMAS .... ..to all 8BIT members and thank you for your comments and help over the year. The greetings may seem a little early because we may have another issue before Christmas. Thanks Chris. All the best ROY (20G). ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: 20G (Roy Dickens) Subject: ACORNS free video. Acorn have been pushing their com- puters recently. 'Send now for free video'. So I did just that ( it was free you see!). To give you a idea to what it is all about just in case you have not seen it read on. The theme is 'Computer Minefield' on a twelve min. video. Family with two children with the tall fellow from Blue Peter prog. He is the question master asking the family what they really needed in a home computer. The Acorn competitors (big names) are each in turn marked as a mine and then blown up! Lots of noise smoke, flames and flying chips (flying not frying). The competitors are not needed because Acorn can do it all! A big sway towards education is the plus they reckon. So when you go shop- ping for a home computer use the check list, does it have a, 32 bit RISC b, affordable c, multimedia d education e, software f, personal productivity g, reliable h, office application i, games j, service and support. That is what they reckon any-how. You are supposed to remember the word T A M E S P R O G S when your in that shop! Hotline No. 0223 254222 Later... Guess what, ACORN have sent me a follow up letter, it looks as though AMIGA have complained. Correction, Amiga do run office applications and education software. They blew that mine up in error! I have purchased a Master 128 and would like to use VIEWSHEET that is already with it. With the speadsheet that I have been using I am able to get all the 12 months printed out using the printers reduced print. The Master Welcome Guide states that to achieve this with Viewsheet I need to know about windows if I want to have more than six months printed on one sheet. Could someone just put me right here? I only use the spreadsheet for home accounts so it doesn't seem worth getting the'ViewSheet User Guide'but if someone has one going cheap(ish) then please ring anytime 0933 55556. Many thanks. Well, think it over and write!!! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: K2K (Peter Davy)) Subject: Random numbers. On skimming through some old 8BS issues I have seen more than one mention of the problem of generating random numbers without repeating one. With some of the programs that I have written, it would be very dreary if words, sentences, passages etc. were dealt with in the same order each time. I therefore pick the sentences etc. at random. To avoid picking the same sentence twice in the same run I establish an array tally$(N%) where N% is the number of sentences. Selection is then as follows: REPEAT:R=RND(N%):UNTILtally$(R)<>"*":tal ly$(R)="*" This will give a different value of R every time until all values from 1 to N% have been delivered. It would seem to be much simpler than having to scan through the numbers already selected to see if there has been duplication. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, To: 999 (all members) From: 2J3 (Chris Richardson) Subject: Joining computers together. Sorry. For REGULAR savings the accumulated value V at the end of n years of `P invested at the beginning of each of the n years is:- V=P*((1+i)^(n+1)-(1+i))/i where i is percentage interest rate R divided by 100. eg R=7.5% i=0.075. As a check `100/annum for 10 years at 10% gives `1753.11 Note if you want to retain future purchasing power R will have to better the published rate of inflation by a good margin.
